HK417, MR308 and the Haenel Challenge

    HK417 — French army

The French army adopted the Heckler & Koch HK417 as a semi-automatic precision rifle for its marksmen. It is the rifle the CR308 is built to compete with.

    M110A1 — US Army

The US Army's Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System, the M110A1, is based on the HK G28 — itself a derivative of the HK417.

    MR308 — the civilian HK417

Heckler & Koch sells the HK417 to civilians as the MR308 (MR762 in the USA). The Haenel CR308 sits in exactly that market.

Haenel — the challenger from Suhl

Haenel made headlines by challenging Heckler & Koch for the German army's new assault rifle contract. The CR308 brings that same ambition to the .308 class.

    Why It's Great

Why the Haenel CR308 Is So Good

    Piston-driven

A short-stroke gas piston keeps the action cleaner and cooler than a classic direct-impingement AR.

    Precision barrel

Cold-hammer-forged and free-floated for consistent groups and a long service life.

    Familiar controls

If you've shot an AR15, you already know how to run it — fully ambidextrous too.

    Full-power cartridge

.308 Win hits harder and reaches further than 5.56, with recoil that stays controllable.

    German build quality

Made in Suhl to the same standards as the rifles it competes with.

    Out of reach at home

Semi-auto .308 rifles are tightly licensed across most of Europe — here you just show ID.

    Buying One

How Much Does an AR10 Cost?

    In the USA

    ≈ $1,000 – $3,500

New AR10-pattern rifles, from entry-level brands to premium builds. A civilian HK MR762 sits above that range.

    In Europe

    ≈ €2,000 – €5,000

A Haenel CR308 is roughly €3,500–5,000 and an HK MR308 more — and you need a licence to buy one. Here you shoot it for 12 PLN per round.

Indicative retail prices; they vary by dealer and country.

Why Shoot an AR10 Haenel CR308 in Poland?

The AR10 is the big brother of the AR15: the same familiar layout, controls and ergonomics, scaled up to fire the full-power .308 Winchester (7.62×51 NATO). Where the AR15 is a light carbine, the AR10 is a semi-automatic precision rifle — the platform armies choose when they need a designated marksman or sniper rifle that can still fire quick follow-up shots.

The Haenel CR308 is a premium German take on that idea. Haenel, from Suhl in Thuringia — one of Germany's historic gunmaking towns — builds it as a direct competitor to the Heckler & Koch HK417, the rifle carried by the French army and, as the G28-based M110A1, by the US Army. The civilian HK417 is sold as the MR308; the CR308 plays in the same league.

What makes the CR308 good is the way it is built: a short-stroke gas piston instead of direct impingement, so the action runs cleaner and cooler; a cold-hammer-forged barrel for accuracy and long life; a free-floating handguard; a fully ambidextrous control layout; and an adjustable stock and cheek rest so you can settle behind the scope properly.

For a European visitor, a semi-auto .308 rifle like this is very hard to shoot at home — strict licensing in the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain keeps it out of reach. In Poland you shoot it on the day under instructor supervision, with only a valid ID.

    FAQ

    AR10 Haenel CR308 — Common Questions

Can I shoot an AR10 in Poland without a licence?

Yes. Polish law lets visitors shoot any firearm at a licensed range under instructor supervision. No firearms licence, no FAC, no permit — you only need a valid ID or passport.

How much does it cost to shoot the Haenel CR308?

.308 Win ammunition is 12,00 PLN per round — instructor and gun rental included, no hidden fees. Ten rounds is a good taster; thirty lets you shoot groups and steel.

What is the difference between an AR10 and an AR15?

Same layout and controls, different size. The AR15 fires the small .223 / 5.56 cartridge; the AR10 is scaled up for the full-power .308 Win / 7.62×51, so it hits harder, reaches further and recoils more.

Is the Haenel CR308 the same as the HK417?

No, but they are direct rivals: both are German short-stroke piston rifles in .308 on the AR10 layout. The HK417 is used by the French army and its derivative serves in the US Army as the M110A1; its civilian version is the MR308.

How much does an AR10 cost to buy?

In the USA, an AR10-pattern rifle costs roughly $1,000 to $3,500 depending on the brand. In Europe, where you need a licence, expect around €2,000 to €5,000 — a Haenel CR308 is roughly €3,500 to €5,000 and an HK MR308 more.

Is the recoil manageable for a first-time shooter?

Yes. The rifle's weight and gas system tame the .308, and you start prone on a bipod with an instructor at your side.

How do I get to the range?

We are in Pawłów (49-300), Opolskie, about 45 minutes from Wrocław Airport. A LUXCAB taxi transfer is around 250 złoty; details on the trip planning page.

How many rounds should I book?

Ten rounds is a proper taster. Thirty rounds lets you check your zero, shoot groups and then ring steel at distance.

Can I shoot it on the same day as an AR15?

Yes — and it is the best way to understand the difference between 5.56 and .308.

Do I get photos of my session?

Yes. You keep your targets and we take photos and short video clips during the session at no extra charge.
