UK Shotgun Certificate Holders — What You Can Shoot in Poland
Beyond shotgunning: how an SGC holder uses a Polish weekend to access pistols and rifles legally.
An SGC in the UK lets you own and shoot a shotgun, full stop. No pistols (banned since 1997 for civilians), no centrefire rifles without an FAC, and absolutely no holster work, dynamic drills or self-loading carbines. For most SGC holders, the appetite for "more" never goes away — and that is why so many of you end up on a flight to Poland.
What changes when you cross the border
In Poland, our range operates under a commercial shooting-school regime. Visiting foreign nationals do not need a Polish firearms licence to shoot with one of our instructors under supervision. Your UK SGC is irrelevant here — but so is the absence of a UK FAC. You can legally fire:

- CZ Shadow 2 competition pistol
- AR15 carbine in 5.56 NATO
- AKM in 7.62×39
- Bolt-action precision rifles to 300 m
- Pump-action 12-gauge (which you already know)
Why the shotgun + Poland combination works so well
- You already know how a long gun behaves. Recoil, mounting, cheek weld, follow-through. Switching to an AR15 is a small step, not a leap.
- Trigger discipline transfers. A clay shooter with a clean trigger is a long way ahead of a complete first-timer on the pistol line.
- You have already passed the UK character test. You are not the demographic anyone worries about.
What we recommend on day one
If you fly in as an SGC holder with no pistol experience, the best half day looks like this:
- Pistol diagnostic on a Glock 19 (50 rounds, lane, no holster)
- Holster introduction (dry, then 50 rounds live)
- Transition to AR15 at 50 and 100 m
- Two pump 12-gauge stages on steel, just for fun
The legal bit, for the cautious
- Importing your own shotgun is possible under the European Firearms Pass, but for a weekend it is rarely worth the paperwork. Our range guns are well maintained and identical to what you would shoot in a UK club.
- You do not need to declare anything when flying back to the UK — you carry no firearm, no ammunition, no parts.
- Your UK SGC is unaffected. Shooting commercially abroad does not require notification to your firearms officer; we have never had a client report an issue.
When in doubt, ring your FEO before you fly. Most are entirely relaxed about commercial training abroad; some appreciate a courtesy heads-up.
