Shoot Real Guns Without a UK Firearms Certificate (2026 Guide)
How UK shooters legally fire pistols, AR15s and AKs in Poland with no FAC, no SGC, no permits. A clear, current 2026 legal guide.
If you live in the UK, you cannot legally own a centre-fire handgun, an AR15, an AK47 or most semi-automatic rifles. Even a Firearms Certificate (FAC) won't unlock those β they've been banned for civilian ownership since 1997 (handguns) and 1988 (semi-auto centre-fire rifles).
But you can legally fire all of them at a licensed range abroad, with no UK paperwork at all. Poland is the closest, cheapest and best-equipped option. Here is exactly how the law works.
What UK law actually says
- The Firearms Act 1968 (as amended) regulates ownership, possession and use of firearms on UK soil.
- It does not restrict what you do abroad. There is no UK law that prevents a British citizen from firing a Glock in Poland.
- You do not need to inform UK authorities. You do not need a permit. You do not need to declare anything on return β you are not carrying a firearm across a border, you fired one at a foreign range and went home.
What Polish law says
- Foreigners may shoot at licensed Polish ranges without a Polish firearms licence, provided they are supervised by a licensed instructor and using range-owned firearms.
- We are a licensed range. Our instructors hold the relevant Polish coaching qualifications. You are covered by our operating licence the moment you step onto the line.
- No ID translation, no apostille, no notarisation. Bring your passport for the safety brief sign-in, that's it.
What you can fire (that you can't in the UK)
- Centre-fire pistols β Glock 17/19/34, CZ Shadow 2, 1911, Desert Eagle.
- AR15 (5.56 NATO) β banned for UK civilian ownership.
- AKM / AK47 (7.62Γ39) β same.
- Semi-auto carbines, sub-machine guns under instructor supervision (MP5, etc.).
- Bolt-action precision rifles out to 300 m β legal in the UK with FAC, but you'll struggle to find the distance.
What you can't do
- You cannot take a firearm home. They stay at the range, full stop.
- You cannot import ammunition as a souvenir. Spent casings can leave; live rounds cannot.
- You cannot shoot unsupervised as a foreign visitor.
The practical loop
- Book your range day online β pay deposit, choose platforms.
- Fly to WRO WrocΕaw (2 h from most UK airports, Β£40βΒ£90 return on Ryanair/easyJet/Wizz).
- 45 min transfer to range.
- Safety brief, shoot for half a day or full day.
- Lunch, photos, sign out.
- Fly home that evening or the next morning.
No certificates, no licence applications, no waiting lists.
How does this compare to a UK range day?

Common UK questions
Do I need an EHIC/GHIC? Yes, for general healthcare cover. Not range-specific.
Will this show up on a UK background check? No. There is no record because no UK law was engaged.
Can I bring my own UK-owned firearm (FAC)? Technically yes via the European Firearms Pass, but the paperwork is heavy and unnecessary β we have everything you need on the rack.
Age limits? 18+ for live fire unless accompanied by a parent on a supervised junior session (16+, case-by-case).
