What 6.5 Creedmoor is, why precision shooters love it, how it compares to .308 Win and .338 Lapua — and how to shoot it from a Daniel Defense DELTA 5 bolt-action rifle in Poland, with no firearms licence.
6.5 Creedmoor was designed in 2007 by Hornady together with the shooters of Creedmoor Sports. It uses a 6.7 mm (.264 in) bullet with a very high ballistic coefficient in a short, efficient case: a flatter trajectory, less wind drift and noticeably less recoil than .308 Win. It is now the dominant cartridge in long-range precision competition such as PRS, and it is equally loved by target shooters and hunters.

6.5 Creedmoor was built for one thing: putting a high-ballistic-coefficient bullet exactly on target at long range with minimal recoil. Compared to .308 Win it flies flatter and drifts less in wind; compared to .338 Lapua it is far cheaper and much softer on the shoulder.
| Cartridge | Bullet | Muzzle velocity | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| .223 Remington | 55-77 gr, .224 in | 900-990 m/s | AR15, low recoil, up to ~500 m |
| .308 Winchester | 147-175 gr, .308 in | 780-850 m/s | Sniper and precision rifles, hunting, up to ~800 m |
| 6.5 Creedmoor | 120-147 gr, .264 in | 820-900 m/s | Long-range competition, PRS, low wind drift |
| .338 Lapua Magnum | 250-300 gr, .338 in | 850-900 m/s | Long-range sniper rifles, 1 000 m+ |
6.5 Creedmoor is a modern rifle cartridge introduced in 2007 by ammunition maker Hornady with the shooters of Creedmoor Sports. It squeezes a slim, aerodynamic 6.5 mm bullet out of a short case at high speed.
The idea was simple: keep the ballistic efficiency of a big long-range cartridge but in a compact, low-recoil package that any short-action bolt gun can shoot. It worked so well that it is now the standard in precision rifle competition.
The 6.5 mm bullets used in 6.5 Creedmoor have some of the best ballistic coefficients in the shooting world: they keep their speed, resist wind drift and drop predictably at long range.
Recoil is mild — clearly softer than .308 Win — so you can spot your own hits, shoot longer sessions and correct faster between shots. For precision shooting, that is a real advantage, not a compromise.
Daniel Defense is best known for its premium AR15 rifles — and the DELTA 5 is their bolt-action precision rifle. It is built on a stiff aluminium chassis with an adjustable stock, a user-adjustable match trigger and a threaded heavy barrel, and it is famous for sub-MOA accuracy.
It is a direct competitor to rifles like the Ruger Precision Rifle and custom Remington 700 builds. Shooting it in 6.5 Creedmoor gives you exactly the package long-range competition shooters use: a modern bolt gun plus a cartridge built to fly flat and hit hard far downrange.

6.5 Creedmoor is a modern long-range rifle cartridge introduced in 2007 by Hornady. It fires a 6.7 mm (.264 in) high-ballistic-coefficient bullet very accurately with low recoil, and it dominates long-range precision competition today.
For long-range precision, yes: it flies flatter, drifts less in wind and recoils less than .308 Win. The .308 still hits harder up close and military 7.62×51 ammo is cheaper and everywhere, which is why it remains the classic sniper cartridge.
The DELTA 5 is Daniel Defense's bolt-action precision rifle: an aluminium chassis, adjustable stock, user-adjustable match trigger and a threaded match barrel, built for sub-MOA accuracy.
