Shoot a Desert Eagle.44 Magnum in Poland

The Desert Eagle is the most recognisable handgun ever made, and mechanically the strangest. Where every other service pistol is recoil-operated, the Desert Eagle uses a gas system and a rotating bolt borrowed from rifle design. That is what lets it fire full magnum cartridges from a semi-automatic handgun, and it is why the pistol weighs close to two kilos loaded.

In .44 Magnum the experience is unlike any other pistol on our line. The muzzle blast is enormous, the report is deep rather than sharp, and the recoil is a long push into your palms rather than the quick snap of a 9 mm. Because the gun is so heavy, that recoil is far more controllable than most people expect — the Desert Eagle looks brutal and shoots surprisingly civilised.

For a European visitor, this is a firearm you almost certainly cannot own or shoot at home. Centrefire handguns are effectively banned for UK civilians, and licensing regimes across France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and Ireland put a magnum pistol out of reach for casual shooters. In Poland, a visitor with photo ID can shoot one on the day, under instructor supervision, with no permit.

Our sessions run one instructor per shooter. You start with the manual of arms and a grip and stance built for magnum recoil, fire your first rounds on paper at 7 metres, then extend to 15–25 metres for slow fire and finish on reactive steel — a .44 Magnum hit on a steel plate is something you feel as much as hear. Ten rounds is enough to say you have done it; twenty to thirty is enough to actually shoot the gun well.
