    .223 Remington & 5,56×45 NATO

.223 Remington is the commercial cartridge; 5,56×45 NATO is the military version loaded to higher pressure. Both use the same .224 in bullet and the same external case dimensions, which is why they look identical — but the chamber and pressure specs are not the same, and that distinction matters on the firing line.

    Comparison

    .223 Rem vs 5,56×45 NATO vs 7,62×39 vs .308

.223 and 5,56 are interchangeable in appearance but not in pressure: a 5,56 NATO chamber safely fires both, while a rifle chambered strictly in .223 Rem should only be fed .223 ammunition. Against 7,62×39 and .308 Win, the 5,56 family trades raw bullet mass for flat trajectory, very low recoil and fast, accurate follow-up shots.

    The guide

Everything shooters ask about .223 and 5,56

Is .223 Rem the same as 5,56×45 NATO?

Dimensionally, almost. Both cartridges use a .224 in (5.70 mm) bullet and a 44.7 mm case, so a 5,56 round will physically chamber in a .223 rifle. The difference is internal: 5,56×45 NATO is loaded to roughly 62 000 psi, while .223 Remington is held near 55 000 psi, and the NATO chamber has a longer throat.

The practical rule: a rifle marked 5,56 NATO can safely fire both .223 Rem and 5,56 NATO. A rifle marked .223 Rem should only be fed .223 Rem. Rifles marked .223 Wylde handle both. Our AR15s are 5,56 NATO chambered, so you shoot either without worry.

    What does 5,56×45 mean?

5,56 is the bullet diameter in millimetres and 45 is the case length: a 5.56 mm projectile in a 45 mm case. The same logic names 7,62×39 (AK47) and 9×19 (pistol). Standard NATO loads are the 55 gr M193 and the 62 gr steel-penetrator M855, often called green tip.

Heavier 69-77 gr match bullets need a faster barrel twist (1:8 or 1:7) to stabilise, which is why modern AR15s ship with those twist rates instead of the old 1:12.

How does it feel to shoot?

Recoil is very light — a flat push rather than a shove — so beginners hit steel on their first magazine and experienced shooters run fast transitions and split times. The flat trajectory means almost no holdover inside 200 m.

Report is sharp, so ear protection is mandatory. From an AR15 with a red dot, most visitors are hitting torso-sized targets at 100 m within the first hour of instruction.

    FAQ

    .223 Rem & 5,56×45 questions

    Can I shoot 5,56 NATO in a .223 rifle?

It will chamber, but it is not recommended: 5,56 NATO runs at higher pressure than .223 Remington. A 5,56 NATO or .223 Wylde chamber fires both safely. Our AR15s are 5,56 NATO chambered.

    What calibre is .223 Rem?

A centrefire rifle cartridge with a .224 in (5.70 mm) bullet in a 44.7 mm case, launched at roughly 900-980 m/s — the civilian equivalent of 5,56×45 NATO.

How far can you shoot .223 / 5,56?

Effective to about 400-500 m from a rifle. Our rifle line runs targets from 25 m out to 300 m, so you shoot both close-range drills and longer precision work.
