    The Cartridge of Sniper Records

    L115A3 — British Army

The Accuracy International L115A3, chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum, is the British Army's long-range sniper rifle. Craig Harrison's record shot at 2,475 metres in Afghanistan in 2009 was fired from one.

    Chris Kyle & the TAC-338

The rifle behind American Sniper: Chris Kyle's McMillan TAC-338 fires the same .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge, and the US Navy's Mk 13 rifle is built around it.

    8.6×70 — built for armour

The cartridge was developed in the 1980s to defeat body armour at 1,000 metres without carrying a heavy .50 anti-materiel rifle — hence its other name, 8.6×70 mm.

Sako TRG 42 — chosen by professionals

Military and police units around the world picked the Finnish Sako TRG 42 as their .338 platform. The same rifle, the same cartridge, is on our line.

    Why It's Great

Why the Sako TRG 42 in .338 Is So Good

    Finnish precision

Sako's cold-hammer-forged barrel and rigid two-lug bolt action deliver the consistency long-range shooting demands.

    Flat and supersonic far out

The .338 Lapua Magnum stays supersonic well past 1,200 metres — flatter and harder-hitting than any 7.62.

    Recoil you can learn from

Roughly twice a .308 and about a third of a .50 BMG: real, but you stay on the scope and call your hits.

    Nightforce glass

You shoot behind the same scopes long-range competitors and military snipers actually use.

    True magnum long-range

This is the calibre shooters move to when they outgrow 6.5 Creedmoor — the real thing, not a simulation.

    Out of reach at home

Magnum precision rifles are tightly licensed across most of Europe — here you just show ID.

    Buying One

How Much Does a .338 Lapua Rifle Cost?

    In the USA

    ≈ $2,500 – $6,000+

New .338 Lapua rifles, from Sako and Savage to premium builds. Accuracy International and McMillan rifles sit above that range. Factory ammunition runs about $4–8 per round.

    In Europe

    ≈ €4,000 – €10,000

A Sako TRG 42 sits in the middle of that range and an Accuracy International AXMC higher — and you need a licence to buy one. Here you shoot the TRG for 50 PLN per round.

Indicative retail prices; they vary by dealer and country.

Why Shoot a .338 Lapua Magnum Sako TRG in Poland?

The .338 Lapua Magnum (8.6×70 mm) was developed in the 1980s for military snipers who needed to defeat body armour at 1,000 metres without carrying a heavy .50 calibre anti-materiel rifle. It sits exactly between the 7.62 NATO class and the .50 BMG: flatter than 7.62, supersonic well past 1,200 metres, and far easier to shoot accurately than a twelve-kilo fifty.

Our rifle is the Sako TRG — the Finnish bolt-action precision rifle widely regarded as one of the finest production sniper rifles in the world. Sako's cold-hammer-forged barrel, rigid two-lug bolt and fully adjustable stock are why military and police units picked it as the platform for their .338 programmes, and why it dominates long-range competition.

Recoil in .338 Lapua Magnum is real but manageable — roughly twice a .308 and about a third of a .50 BMG. Behind a Nightforce scope, you feel the rifle settle back into your shoulder and watch the trace of the bullet all the way to the target. It is the calibre most long-range competitors move to when they outgrow 6.5 Creedmoor.

For a European visitor this is the long-range experience you cannot set up at home. Licensing in the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain keeps magnum precision rifles out of reach, and even where a licence exists, ranges rarely stretch beyond 100 metres. In Poland you shoot the TRG on the day, under instructor supervision, with only a valid ID.

    FAQ

.338 Lapua Magnum — Common Questions

Can I shoot a .338 Lapua Magnum in Poland without a licence?

Yes. Polish law lets visitors shoot any firearm at a licensed range under instructor supervision. No firearms licence, no FAC, no permit — you only need a valid ID or passport.

How much does it cost to shoot the Sako TRG 42 in .338 Lapua?

.338 Lapua Magnum ammunition is 50,00 PLN per round — instructor and gun rental included, no hidden fees. Five rounds (250 PLN) is a proper taster; ten rounds lets you read the wind and shoot groups.

Is .338 Lapua the same as 8.6×70 mm?

Yes — 8.6×70 mm is the metric name for the same cartridge. You will also see it written .338 Lapua Mag or .338 LM.

How far can I actually shoot here?

Our rifle line runs reactive steel out to 300 metres. The cartridge itself stays supersonic well past 1,200 metres — this is the round military snipers use at 1,000 m and beyond.

How much does a .338 Lapua rifle cost to buy?

In the USA, a .338 Lapua rifle costs roughly $2,500 to $6,000+, with Accuracy International and McMillan builds above that. In Europe, expect around €4,000 to €10,000 — and you need a licence. Factory ammunition runs about $4–8 per round.

Is the recoil too much for a first-time shooter?

No. It is about twice a .308 and roughly a third of a .50 BMG, and you start prone on a bipod with an instructor at your side. Most first-timers keep the reticle on target through the shot.

How do I get to the range?

We are in Pawłów (49-300), Opolskie, about 45 minutes from Wrocław Airport. A LUXCAB taxi transfer is around 250 złoty; details on the trip planning page.

How many rounds should I book?

Five rounds (250 PLN) is a proper taster. Ten rounds is where you stop fighting the recoil and start reading the wind.

Can I shoot it on the same day as the .50 BMG?

Yes — .338 Lapua against .50 BMG in one long-range session is the classic comparison, and it is how most visitors finish the day.

Do I get photos of my session?

Yes. You keep your targets and we take photos and short video clips during the session at no extra charge.
