Why we run 2.26" heights: the tactical and competitive edge

Passive aiming under night vision (NVG / NODs)

The primary operational driver behind the 2.26" optic height is passive aiming under night vision devices. When operating with helmet-mounted NVGs, forcing a tight, traditional cheek weld against the stock causes severe mechanical interference:

• Tube collisions. Traditional mount heights force shooters to smash expensive NVG tubes against the upper receiver, optic housing or stock.
• Eye relief and alignment. A 2.26" optical centerline brings the red dot directly up to the eye level of helmet-mounted optics, allowing rapid dot acquisition through night vision without compromising posture or smashing gear.

"Heads-up" ergonomics for dynamic movement and PCSL

While born from night vision requirements, the elevated mount has proven equally transformative for daytime tactical application and competitive shooting sports such as PCSL.

• The rifle comes to the eye, not the eye to the rifle. Rather than collapsing your neck down to find the optic, bringing the stock up to your shoulder while keeping your spine straight places the reticle directly in your natural sight line.
• Maximizing peripheral awareness. A heads-up posture frees your peripheral field of view, letting you scan target arrays, spot barricade transitions and maintain situational awareness significantly faster.
• Reduced cervical strain. Long shooting sessions, heavy helmet loads and aggressive shooting positions create neck fatigue. A neutral spine posture keeps fatigue down and target transition speeds high.

Clearance for gear and helmets

Standard cheek welds often fall apart when shooters wear heavy protective equipment or bulky outerwear:

• Electronic hearing protection. Thick earcups frequently bind against stock combs on traditional 1.41" or 1.57" mounts.
• Plate carriers and CBRN / gas masks. Body armor plates shift shoulder placement, while protective masks obstruct close-facial contact. The extra height provided by the Unity mount delivers the clearance needed for a natural sight picture regardless of personal protective equipment.

The FAST magnifier: a real Flip-To-Center (FTC) solution

The Unity FAST mount is an integrated ecosystem designed around an Aimpoint red dot and magnifier setup.

• Flip-To-Center (FTC) magnifier integration. Traditional flip-to-side mounts hang 3x or 6x magnifiers off the side of the rifle when disengaged. That creates snag hazards, shifts weapon balance to the side and blocks peripheral vision. The Unity FAST FTC mechanism retracts the magnifier straight down into the optic line, keeping the weapon balanced, streamlined and snag-free.
• Integrated pre-install on FTC mounts. The FAST QD lever comes standard on Unity FTC magnifier mounts, giving shooters immediate quick-detach modularity right out of the box, so you can strip weight when magnification isn't needed.

Managing height-over-bore (offset)

Training with a 2.26" optic height introduces a greater distance between the mechanical bore centerline and the optical sightline — height over bore. At close range (3 m to 10 m) your point of impact will sit lower than your point of aim. At PSC we train shooters to instinctively compensate for this offset — typically aiming 2.5 to 3 inches high on close-range targets — to convert faster posture into precise hits.
